The Korean Cultural Centre UK (KCCUK), in collaboration with Ilmin Museum of Art, is delighted to present Korean Traditional Painting in Alter-age: Pure and Hybrid, an exhibition centring on literati painting as a key strand of Korean traditional art, juxtaposing works from the collections of Ilmin Museum of Art and the Ilmin Cultural Foundation with contemporary Korean painting.   Bringing works from collections of the Ilmin Museum of Art and the Ilmin Cultural Foundation into dialogue with four contemporary painters, this exhibition spans masterpieces from the late Joseon Dynasty through the twentieth century alongside works by younger artists.    Through this encounter, historical works and contemporary reinterpretations reflect one another, opening renewed questions around the meaning, continuity, and identity of Hangukhwa (Korean painting).   KCCUK will also host a programme of public events to accompany the exhibition, opening with a private view on Thursday 25 June 2026. Across the summer, events will include a talk on the continuity and transformation of Korean painting, a workshop for secondary school students, and a curator-led exhibition tour. The Korean Cultural Centre UK (KCCUK), in collaboration with the City of Icheon, is delighted to present Icheon and Beyond: The Space Within Form, an exhibition exploring the philosophical and material foundations of Korean ceramics. Rooted in the rich heritage of Icheon—a UNESCO Creative City of Crafts and Folk Art—the exhibition is inspired by the profound idea that a vessel’s true essence lies in the empty space it holds. It examines how artists shape not only clay but also space, balance, and meaning. The exhibition features a remarkable group of 27 practitioners, bringing together 21 Master Artisans of Icheon alongside 6 Contemporary Artists. Together, they trace the sedimented time and layered mastery of the craft. The journey begins with works that serve as a physical record of silent endurance and technical perfection—a distilled presence of aesthetic values formed through the patient accumulation of years. This lineage of mastery flows into visionary contemporary responses, where the solid strata of tradition meet modern experimentation. By deconstructing forms and weaving new narratives into clay, the participating artists demonstrate that tradition is not a static relic, but a living practice continually renewed through the kiln. It is a transition from the wisdom of accumulated seasons to the pulse of contemporary innovation. Presented as part of London Craft Week 2026, Icheon and Beyond opens a significant dialogue between the craft traditions of Korea and the UK, both of which value material integrity and the sensitivity of the creative process. We invite visitors to look beyond the surface and reflect on the quiet strength and unseen layers of time required to transform earth and fire into lasting form. The Korean Cultural Centre UK (KCCUK) is delighted to present the exhibition NEW GEN: The Emerging Voices, the latest edition of its annual open call programme supporting Korean artists based in the UK. This year’s exhibition introduces eight artists whose practices span painting, sculpture, moving image, and installation, exploring how identity, materiality, and technology shape contemporary experience. Selected by a distinguished panel comprising Daphne Chu (Curator, Ikon Gallery, Birmingham), Alvin Li (Curator, International Art, supported by Asymmetry Art Foundation, Tate Modern), and Yung Ma (Senior Curator, Hayward Gallery, London), the exhibition highlights the diversity and depth of emerging Korean artistic practice today. The committee’s international expertise ensures a dynamic dialogue between the UK and Korean contemporary art scenes. Collectively, the artists navigate the intersections of myth, memory, ecology, and digital culture, reflecting on how personal experience and collective history intertwine. Heeyoung Noh explores the lingering presence of trauma and tenderness within domestic life, while Woojin Joo draws from folklore and shamanistic motifs to reveal how mythic imagination continues to shape the everyday. Yumin Lee reflects on survival and emotion within cycles of capitalism and digital mediation, and Soohyun Choi examines fragile systems of authorship, ownership, and artistic value that underpin the art market. Sangbum Ahn investigates ecological and technological entanglements, revealing how progress and collapse coexist within the same system. Jo Jae reconsiders perception and sensibility under technological acceleration, translating digital conditions into material and spatial forms that propose new ways of seeing and feeling. Jihoon Cho and Woojin Jeon explore materiality as a site of adaptation and care, transforming instability and tension into gestures of endurance and renewal. The Korean Cultural Centre UK, in partnership with the Korea Heritage Service, is pleased to announce Strolling Through Korean Gardens, a new exhibition that reimagines Korea’s rich garden heritage through a contemporary lens. Opening on 11 September 2025, the exhibition offers UK audiences a rare opportunity to encounter the philosophy, beauty, and poetic sensibility of traditional Korean gardens through digital technologies, sensory environments, and interdisciplinary storytelling. Through large-scale digital projections, immersive soundscapes by composer Jang Young-gyu, and multisensory environments, the exhibition brings to life celebrated gardens such as Soswaewon, Bokildo, and the Secret Garden of Changdeokgung Palace. Visitors can also experience the key aesthetic concept of Chakyung (“borrowed scenery”) in a recreated pavilion space, and reflect on gardens as places of ritual, memory, and imagination. Featuring contemporary works by Ellie Kyungran Heo and Jihae Hwang alongside literary reflections such as Korean Tea Classics, the exhibition presents the Korean garden not only as a historical legacy but also as a living source of artistic and philosophical inspiration.
